What are 'reasonable adjustments' at work?

 

Claire Henderson: People with mental health problems are covered by the Disability Discrimination Act, which allows for people to ask for 'reasonable adjustments', for example, in employment. So for people with mental health problems it might be important to have slightly flexible working hours to go off to attend appointments. Or if they are on medication, it is quite sedative, it could be difficult to get up early in the morning. There might be certain things they are able to exclude from the job description if those are particularly problematic – so for example, to reduce the amount of face to face contact, or something like that. So there are some things which can be reasonably asked for that can make a big difference to people. There are problems in that some people with mental health problems either don’t see themselves as disabled or don’t quite fit the definition, so it’s not perfect by any means.
